Edith Cowan University recognised their campus needed improved study and socialising areas to give their students the quality educational experience expected.
The project aimed to provide a pleasing flow to the building’s aesthetics and enhance the student and visitor experience. Renascent collaborated with Perth architect Mode Architects to transform this area into a vibrant multi-use zone.
The interconnecting stairs in the library were a key feature, providing both a functional and enjoyable space for students to relax, as well as opening up the wider library space.
However, the project came with tight timelines and site constraints. To meet these challenges, the stairs were constructed by a combination of structural steel and LVL timber beams. They were cladded with structural ply and then covered in engineered blackbutt timber, resulting in significantly faster construction over traditional concrete or steel fabrication.
The team also breathed new life into a previously underused courtyard area, giving the students outside space to enjoy.
