Renascent was engaged to refurbish and upgrade the Transport Management Centre (TMC) Operations Room, a crucial 24/7 facility that monitors and manages Sydney’s road network. Originally opened in 1999 ahead of the Sydney Olympics, the centre required a modern, future-ready refurbishment to enhance operational capability and support continuous service delivery.
The project involved a full refurbishment of the operations space, finishes improvements, services upgrades, and the facilitation of the installation of a 23-metre-long digital screen wall, one of the largest of its kind in Australia. This state-of-the-art AV wall streams live CCTV feeds, network data, analytics, and real-time incident information to improve situational awareness, particularly during major events or emergencies.
The new operations hub also features drone pilot stations with beyond-visual-line-of-sight capability, enabling rapid response to incidents across NSW, and a 55% increase in workspaces to accommodate expanded around-the-clock operations. Additional upgrades include improved lighting, new amenities and nap pods to support shift workers, and upgraded communications technology for faster public and media updates.
Working within a secure, live environment presented unique challenges. Renascent implemented buildability and value-engineering solutions, including curving existing ceilings and bulkheads to align with the AV wall design, and managing long-lead items through early procurement and supplier substitution. Close collaboration and coordination workshops with stakeholders ensured the complex services integration and program milestones were achieved efficiently.
Now complete, the revamped facility provides a high-performance, resilient operations centre supporting 123 on-site staff and more than 320 personnel across NSW. A significant step forward in the state’s transport management capability.
